“Built in 1889, the Centennial Hall at the Sydney Town Hall holds a special place in the hearts of all Sydneysiders as the centre of civic life in this harbour-side city. Therefore, to see Raffles’ flags flanking the monument on a beautiful, sunny day was a great moment in our brand’s 25-year social history,” said Robert De Giovanni, Marketing Director of Raffles Sydney.

Degrees were awarded to 160 graduands on the day, with a total of 285 graduands being recognised in the presence of the Honourable Jillian Skinner, MP, who gave a rousing speech encouraging the students to “commit to lifelong learning”. In addition to the recognition of both undergraduate and postgraduate students across the board in Design, Commerce and Accountancy, special awards for excellence in each discipline were announced by Academic Director Professor Patrick Bernard to honour the diligence of specific graduands in their respective fields of enquiry.

“We have had such overwhelming feedback from students about this year’s graduation ceremony, with so many proud parents commenting on the grandeur of the Town Hall. Many parents who had flown to Sydney especially for the occasion were thrilled to be able to watch their children being recognised in their disciplines, not only in front of the Raffles’ academic community, but also in front of the whole city,” said Riska Winata, Raffles Sydney’s Director of Student Services.

We certainly look forward to see the graduands take the Raffles name to newer heights in their careers. Raffles Sydney is dedicated to uncover the potential of students in Australia and beyond, and offers qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework across Australia and around the world, in the same way as other Australian degrees. "Designed by Raffles" sleepwear at Crowne Plaza

Singapore - The next time you visit Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, you could be donning a “designed by Raffles” sleepwear. In the Singapore finale of the “Dressed to Rest” sleepwear design competition organised by Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Raffles Singapore Fashion Designer Mai Takemori clinched the Singapore grand winner award, whilst the second runner-up title went fellow schoolmate Juliana Ng.

In a bid to promote budding fashion talent, the resort chain challenged design students from across the region to design a stylish sleepwear that promotes a good night’s sleep. Students are to create a sleepwear which combines both form and function for the traveller on the road to success.

The finale was held at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport where models strutted down the runway donning the sleepwear designs, which were judged based on overall style, originality, comfort and consistency with the Crowne Plaza brand and colours.

Raffles Fashion Designer Mai was excited over her win. "It took me by surprise as the competition was tough with extremely creative and innovative designs. I am grateful to Raffles Creative Practitioner Arzelle who guided me through the design and production processes. Winning the competition has definitely made me more ambitious and given me a boost of confidence to strive for the better," she said.

With comfort as the key factor, Mai designed a fuss-free, easy to wear and comfortable sleepwear, drawing inspirations from children's nighties in the Victorian era. She also incorporated roominess of the flare silhouette and infused modern details such as contrasting collar, piping, cuffs and buttons into her design.

Second runner-up Juliana also shared, "I have learnt that we must design with the client in mind and ensure that our design fits the theme and target audience. Learning from our competitors and critiques are also important."

Creative Practitioner Arzelle commented, "The students are truly passionate about their studies and future by taking up the challenge. Such competition not only gives them good exposure but also provides them with the experience to work with media and handle questions under pressure. The competition was made more challenging as students had to create their designs in line with the style and clientele of the Crowne Plaza brand."

On top of cash prizes and the valuable experience to kick-start their careers in fashion industry for the winners, Mai also won an internship opportunity with menswear label, evenodd.

Congratulations to Mai and Juliana for their achievements and for exemplifying the true Raffles quality of Success by Design!

Raffles American School’s student-led conferences empower and motivate the all-rounded student

Iskandar, Malaysia - Raffles American School (RAS) celebrates the success of its annual student-led conferences. Into the second year, the conferences involved students from grades one to nine, as well as their parents, who were invited to step into their children’s classroom experience and share their achievements and learning progress.

Students were given guidelines in order to help them prepare for a successful sharing session. Under the guidance of their advisory teachers, students focused on presenting their acquisition of the “RAS Four Learning Outcomes” – Problem Solving/Thinking, Communication, Organization/Research and Character/Interpersonal Skills.

As part of their presentation, students prepared a portfolio of their work and achievements, providing evidence of their strength in acquiring the learning outcomes through the various subject areas. They also acknowledged areas of challenges that require them to put in more effort and attention, which empowers them to acknowledge and improve on their areas of weaknesses.

By getting students to lead the sharing session with their parents, they are taught to be responsible for their learning progress and proactively take charge of their education. Parents also received a chance to observe their children in control of their learning, experience their pride and share in their goals for achieving further learning.

Raffles Jakarta joins the “GREEN YOUTH FEST” to raise awareness of environment sustainability

Jakarta, Indonesia - Raffles Fashion and Interior Designers from Raffles Jakarta participated in “GREEN YOUTH FEST”, organised by Jakarta’s Central Park Mall in conjunction with WWF Earth Hour and Earth Day.

Central Park Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in Jakarta, launched the “GREEN YOUTH FEST” to create awareness and promote a more environment-friendly society. Echoing the aim of the event, the Raffles Designers created sustainable fashion and furniture designs from materials that are recycled or creatively reused, demonstrating how we can transform waste into new and useful products.

The creations by these Raffles Designers have successfully brought across the message on sustainable living to the young, urban crowd. It was also a meaningful experience for the students, as they have increased their own awareness to pursue more sustainable, eco-friendly designs.

Raffles Interior Designers Nadya Puteri and Helena Florensia have gained invaluable experience from participating in the project. Nadya said, “Through this project, I have learnt that using waste materials (to design) is more than just to help create a better environment; if we know how to transform the waste materials creatively, it can turn into an item that is both useful and low-cost to produce.”

Helena shares the same view. “I learnt how waste materials can find a new lease of life through recycling or reusing. As designers, we have to support the concept of sustainable design and apply it to our daily lives,” she said.

The Raffles Designer is exposed to real world issues and is constantly challenged to push the boundaries of the industry. This is the holistic education at Raffles, for we firmly believe that success is not a coincidence – Success is by Design.

Experiential learning at Raffles

Bangkok, Thailand and Singapore - There is more to learning than just sitting through lessons in the classroom environment. The Raffles Designer is exposed to a holistic education designed to be industry-focused and relevant, where the learning focus is hands-on and experiential.

Raffles Bangkok recently organised a six-day trip to Italy for Raffles Interior Designers, where the students were exposed to the interior design styles and culture of Italy, a country that is rich in history and Art, and leading exporter of high-end furniture.

The group learnt about the history and evolution of interior design and visited historical landmarks and museums such as the Castello Sforzesco and Civic Cabinet of Drawings, as well as the modern and technologically-advanced office space, Bovisa Co-working Space. The highlight of the trip was a workshop on the parallelism between photography and interior design held at Fabrica Del Vapore, Milan’s centre for creativity and culture.

Over at Raffles Singapore, Raffles Designers learnt more about Art and honed their command of the English language through practical field trips and interactive sessions with the industry.

Students studying the History of Arts module attended a talk on Land Art by Art Outreach at *Scape and got their hands dirty in a bag painting activity at Vince Music Art Studio, which required them to draw inspirations from art styles they have learnt in class. Through the day’s activities, the Raffles Designers saw that art is more than just about paintings, sculptures, or even architecture. They also learnt that simple art pieces can be difficult to execute, and more respect should be credited to artists regardless of the style and time period.

Raffles Singapore’s Creative Practitioner Queenie Chan commented, “It is good for the students to hear about art from Art Outreach, which is a breakthrough from the usual classroom learning. It was also heartening to see that the students looked up art styles that were previously discussed in class during the hands-on activity. It showed that they were actively engaged in what they have learned. This will benefit them cognitively as their perception of what is considered art is being challenged.”

Another group of Raffles Designers from the English Language programme visited the River Safari to gain inspiration and knowledge for their related writing projects.

It was a valuable opportunity for them to bond with their creative practitioners and classmates, which will in turn benefit their in-class learning. The trip also gave them the opportunity to practise all four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The Raffles Designers commented that the field trip gave them a better understanding of the diversity of wildlife around the world, and they were all praise for this out-of-the-classroom learning experience.
