Singapore - After years of hard work and education, Raffles Singapore’s graduates emerged all ready for their next challenge: to be the next generation of cutting-edge designers and professionals. Their works and results were displayed and witnessed by families, prominent designers, key industry partners and numerous distinguished guests at Fairmont Singapore on 10 December 2013.

“EDGE” was the theme for the graduation ceremony, unravelled by the brand new campus that was launched in April 2013. The new campus acts as an overarching element that presents the edge of Raffles and coincides with the college mission in creating a better environment for quality education. The theme was conceptualised by Raffles Singapore’s very own Visual Communication students.

For the first time, Raffles Singapore collaborated with VMSD, a specialist in full integrated brand activation strategies, to present the “VMSD Young Talents Scholarship Award”. The award offers scholarships worth $10,000 to four full-time Raffles students per year and serves as a form of recognition to the young and talented uprising students from Raffles Singapore. To commence the award, a signing ceremony was held during the graduation show.

Dr Loretta Chen, Creative and Business Development Director of VMSD, said, “I am really impressed by the standards of Raffles Designers. They produce superior work based on cutting-edge and innovative ideas. The fashion show was well-curated and displayed a wide range of designs, tastes and expressions. They challenged themselves to the extreme and spared no effort in the choice of fabric and thought processes. Their efforts were indeed commendable.”

Also for the first time, shoes for the fashion show were sponsored by Elska, an online shoe boutique based in Singapore set up by Raffles alumnus Ace Chia and current Raffles student Jessalynne Woo, who is pursuing her Bachelor of Design degree with a major in Fashion Marketing. As a Fashion Design graduate, Ace knew that their artistic edge designs can elevate a designer’s collection and save time for the students in looking for the right pair of shoes to match their collections. To the graduating and current students, Ace said, “Embrace ambiguity, never give up and always enjoy the process of what you do.”

Raffles Singapore witnessed over 500 graduates for the cohort and congratulates all its new edge graduates, wishing them all the best in their future endeavours.

Singapore - The nation’s most prestigious design accolade was conferred on two alumni of Raffles Singapore - Alfie Leong was “Designer of the Year” and Brett Cameron’s work was recognised as “Design of the Year” - at the annual “President’s Design Award 2013”.

Established in 2006, the Award is Singapore’s most prestigious design accolade as it represents pinnacle of recognition in Singapore’s design sector. It honours the significant achievements and contributions of the nation’s design talents and is awarded to designers who have pushed the envelope to make a significant difference to the community through design that improves the quality of life.

Alfie won the award for his creativity and achievements in fashion design. He is a successful fashion entrepreneur with two private labels, mu and A.W.O.L. Raffles Colombo is the creative mind behind Miss France 2014 Fashion Show

Colombo, Sri Lanka - One might say Raffles Colombo is the pride of the nation when the creative director of the “Miss France 2014” pre-pageant fashion show was its creative practitioner Dinesh Chandrasena, a Sri Lankan who has earned himself an illustrious reputation in the global fashion industry. His Fashion Design students from Raffles Colombo also joined as backstage crew members. Together, they put up a remarkable show for thousands of viewers.

Dinesh is an internationally-renowned fashion designer who has designed clothes for leading Hollywood stars such as Cindy Crawford, Dayana Mendoza and Jennifer Aniston, just to name a few.

The French beauties at the glamorous show were clad in his “Red Bananah” collection alongside other local labels.

Dinesh joined Raffles Colombo as a full-time creative practitioner to impart his rich industry knowledge and adept skills to students who aspire to be the next emerging fashion designers. His absolute confidence in his students’ capabilities was apparent, as one could not deny that only a top-notch team would have the golden opportunity to be part of a global event like the Miss France fashion show.

The young Raffles Designers were assigned with the crucial task of coordination work to get the 22 stunning beauties ready for their walk on the ramp. Andreea Londhart, who is also a creative practitioner of Raffles Colombo, was in charge of the backstage team.

To the Raffles students, besides the great exposure, they could apply their knowledge in real events and even glamorise their portfolios with such experience. This would definitely give them an advantage over others who are just coming out of school and have no practical experience. As an educational institute focused on developing students with strong practical skills, Raffles Colombo has been relentless in exposing its students through industry partnerships and recruiting industry experts to be part of its academic team.

It was the first time that Miss France pre-pageant was being held in Sri Lanka. The extravagant event held on 21 November 2013 was attended by French Ambassador Jean Paul-Monchau, diplomats, corporate leaders and Miss Sri Lanka.

East meets West at Raffles Sydney’s graduate showcase

Sydney, Australia - Inspired creativity and edgy design blended with a dazzling theme of “New Byzantium” were spotted at Raffles Sydney’s graduation fashion show held on 10 December 2013.

The annual professional runway show is an extravagant undertaking and recognised by the industry as one of the most important dates on the Sydney fashion calendar. Previewing collections from some of the hottest young local and international design talents, the showcased styles are the culmination of three years’ work by Raffles Sydney’s graduating students.

For the fashion industry, the runway show provided a glimpse into the upcoming stars of next year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW), as the top designers from the night will show their collections at a special Raffles MBFW runway production.

“The quality of talent at this year’s show is outstanding,” said Nick Comino, Raffles Sydney’s Programme Director of Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing. “Some of the pieces display a truly mind-blowing standard of tailoring and design. This really is a must-attend event for the fashion industry and media.”

Past Raffles’ graduation fashion shows have attracted some 500 guests including designers, industry, media and bloggers. High profile attendees have included Akira Isogawa, Nicola Finetti and Samantha Harris.

The runway presentation was held in conjunction with the highly-acclaimed “Graduate Showcase”, which included outstanding design works produced by Raffles students across the fields of Graphic Design, Interior Design, Digital Media and Photography.

Raffles Designers from Jakarta, Singapore and Sydney open fashion show with great fanfare

Jakarta, Indonesia - At one of the biggest fashion shows in Southeast Asia, eight Fashion Design students from Raffles’ colleges in Jakarta, Singapore and Sydney assembled together to present their collections.

Opening the “Jakarta Fashion Week 2014” was Ivon Limadhy, who recently graduated from Raffles Jakarta. The Raffles Designer showcased four pieces from the “Libery Fatali” collection, which was dominated by leather and unique embellishment. Claudya Marthen (Raffles Jakarta) followed with her “Punk Paradox” collection with rock ‘n’ roll influence, and the result was leather-studded jackets combined with graphic patterned pieces and with matching transparent cases. Maria Valentine Lidya (Raffles Jakarta) displayed a futuristic avant-garde collection named “Past Lessons | Future Protection”, transforming clear plastic material into creative-futuristic wardrobe with pixelated weaving pattern.

Daniella Grace (Raffles Jakarta) took inspiration from ice crystal for her “Diamond Dust” collection, exhibiting four romantic pieces in white as ice and transparent as crystal.

Peggy Hartanto, a graduate of Raffles Sydney, presented “Quantum”, a classy 2014 Spring/Summer collection with ruffles detail and see-through material. Meanwhile, Raffles Singapore’s alumni continued to wow the audiences. Lusiana Liauw brought a very feminine vibe to the show through her floral pattern and froufrou combined with stone embellishment. Catherine Soepadhi’s “ABOCS” drove the crowd into a sweet winter with her collection of dominating fur for menswear, and pleat and lace in womenswear. Steffie Setiawan then closed the show perfectly with the houndstooth pattern nicely carried out in a long jacket and tweed blazer, extending the stay in the realm of winter.

A total of 48 garments were presented by the Raffles Designers; they won the plaudits of the crowd for their creativity and originality.

The four recent graduates of Raffles Jakarta have certainly proven their mettle and skills through this fashion show, even though they were only students at the point of participation. Together with the talented Raffles alumni, their creative works astonished the international crowd and media. Positive reviews from the American, European and Australian media have shown the growth of Jakarta as a fashion capital and revealed Raffles at its best.

Stellar performance by Raffles Mumbai at star-studded fashion show

Mumbai, India - While celebrity hosts Sharon Stone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan were addressing the audiences at a gold-themed fashion show, Raffles Mumbai students were busy dressing up the models backstage, making sure that they looked glamorous and gorgeous on the runway.

The inaugural fashion event was presented by amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, at The Taj Hotel Mumbai on 17 November 2013. In support of amfAR’s lifesaving AIDS research programmes, Raffles Mumbai volunteered its students to help illuminate the event.

The Raffles Designers assisted top designers like Rohit Bahl and Tarun Tahiliani to make sure everything, from accessories to outfits, were in the right order for the models. They were also entrusted with other important roles to ensure a smooth running of the fashion show, which was attended by more than 300 luminary guests.

Even though the Raffles Designers were working alongside famous designers at this star-studded fashion show, they remained poised and executed their skills and creativity brilliantly. The event organiser also commended the students for their professionalism and dedication to their crafts.

Without a doubt, Raffles Mumbai was extremely proud of its students for putting up an awesome performance in the presence of top designers and models. Raffles Designers were truly the stars that night.

Metamorphosis takes place at Raffles Singapore

Singapore - Enter the concierge at Raffles Singapore and one is greeted by a rabble of butterflies breaking away from a mannequin and flying towards the sky. “Metamorphosis” is the design theme conceptualised by the Marketing students for their college. Launched in December 2013, the work adds vibrancy and liveliness to the campus.

The theme is a reinforcement of Raffles’ “Raw to Brilliant” branding, where the hidden potential of a student is uncovered and polished after graduating from Raffles.

The mannequin is draped with butterflies which gradually spiral their way up the pillar and to the ceiling. As the butterflies continue their pathway to success by flying over the “Raffles Wall of Fame”, which is a showcase of successful Raffles alumni, they eventually fly out of the campus. This is a depiction of how an education with Raffles will help students develop their skills and transform them into professional talents and as they pursue their career aspirations beyond Raffles.

To heighten the branding initiative outdoor, the four entities of Raffles Singapore: Raffles Design Institute, Raffles School of Business, Raffles Merchandising Institute and Raffles Academy of Continuing Education, are represented by pillar posters right outside the school building - Raffles Education Square.

The students who conceptualised the theme and spruced up the campus certainly deserve a worthy mention. They are: Natalie Kalkowski, Seraphine Teng, Joey Low Jia Yi, Luu Vu Hoang, Kim Andrea, Shawn Chen Yini and Caren Tio. A big thank you to these Raffles Marketers!

Raffles Jakarta graduates soar at glitzy Raffles Night 2013

Jakarta, Indonesia - The charm and drive of Raffles Jakarta’s graduating students was unreservedly unveiled at “Raffles Night 2013” when they displayed their final year projects to their peers and parents, as well as Raffles alumni and industry partners, through a graduate showcase.

Matching perfectly with the “Four Seasons” theme, the annual event was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Jakarta. Raffles Night represented the motivation and a glimpse of future expectations of Raffles Jakarta, as it set a higher expectation for itself and envisioned a bright future for its students who would soon embark on their careers.

Graduating students from Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing and Management, Multimedia Design, Visual Communication, Interior Design and Business demonstrated what they have learnt and flaunted their creativity and skills that evening. Aside from the exhibition of their works, the fashion show was a showcase of amazing collections by 11 promising Raffles Designers. The theme of the night was depicted through their collections on the runway, with works such as the icy “Diamond Dust”, ethnic warmth of “Metropole Heritage” and summery “Faded Garden”.

The students’ ingenuity and originality shown through their works had elicited rave reviews from the guests.

Out of the 82 graduating students, six of them received special recognition for their exceptionally excellent academic achievements. They were Maria Valentina Lydia (Fashion Design), Imanjar Nahjan Radhita (Fashion Marketing and Management), Kimberly Alicia Wright (Interior Design), Miranda Valentia Djuari (Multimedia Design), Edgina Callista Lauda Tjia (Visual Communication) and David Kusuma Mulya (Business Management).

As Raffles Jakarta wishes all its graduates the very best for their future, it also excitedly looks forward to the next Raffles Night to see more students soar to greater heights.

Raffles Delhi students design clothes for Kids on RAMPage

New Delhi, India - About 120 children walked down the ramp, in exclusive collections designed by Raffles Delhi’s students, to raise awareness about social equality. The “Kids on Rampage” fashion show organised by Navjyoti India Foundation and India Vision Foundation (IVF) had attracted more than 50 invited guests and hundreds of shoppers at Select City Walk Mall on 30 November 2013.

The two foundations were founded by Dr Kiran Bedi with the aim of providing education to the children living in urban slums and whose parents are prison inmates. The overarching objective is to challenge social inequalities and empower the vulnerable.

The fashion show saw children of underserved communities, aged between five and 18, walking on the ramp with icons of the corporate world to draw attention towards their untapped talent and the need for equal opportunities in terms of quality education, better standards of living and access to vocational training. Raffles Delhi and four other designers from India, Thailand and Dubai were invited to design garments for the children.

Dr Kiran Bedi said, “I am very grateful to all the supporters for becoming a part of this event and for walking hand-in-hand with the children of Navjyoti and IVF. I would especially like to thank the designers for providing the outfits and enabling our children to have a joyous experience.”

The Raffles Designers were very excited too, as they were able to design clothes for such a large-scale event and for a good cause. They have also gained invaluable exposure and learning experience from this fashion show.

Both Raffles Delhi students Vrinda Monga and Ravi K. Tirkey said convivially that it was an amazing feeling to be able to contribute to the society through their creations. They also complimented the children for being extremely confident, and they looked great in their garments. Together, they said, “This experience cannot be said in words. It felt so good to be able to deploy our talent in design towards a worthy cause.”

Singapore - A new record has been added onto Joe Chia’s many achievements. The Raffles Singapore alumnus was recognised as one of Asia’s most influential designers at the “Mercedes Benz STYLO Asia Fashion Week”.

“It was really unexpected! I am truly grateful to Mercedes Benz STYLO Asia Fashion Week for the opportunity to showcase my designs. I would also like to thank my supporters who voted for me and the juries for awarding me as one of Asia’s most influential designers. It is always a great honour to receive awards and recognition, especially after all the hard work. At the end of the day, it reminds me that it is all worth it and this is what keeps me going,” said Joe.

The event is the first ever Asia-wide collaboration of top emerging designers, taking place in a different Asian host city each year. It is a collaboration of 12 official fashion associations across Asia, namely China, Korea, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam, each showcasing their best designers in one central location. This international platform also plays host to top buyers, media, editors, retailers, celebrities and VIPs from around the world.

Joe’s SS14 Chapter 03 collection is eclectic in its silhouettes and exhales edgy cuts on layers of highly textured fabrication, which is expressed through the label’s signature monochromatic colour palette. It is highly accented with the reinterpretation of common materials by infusing tradition with modernity, bringing an unexpected twist to the ordinary melting scene. With his outstanding achievement, Joe will be looking at showcasing his designs on various international platforms and reaching out to an even bigger pool of audiences.

With three Raffles alumni - Joe Chia, Joyce Wong and Siddharth Shashankan - shortlisted for the award, Raffles Singapore sure stands proud.

Paper dreams make high fashion a reality

Sydney, Australia - Wearable art has taken on a new meaning at Raffles Sydney with fashion talent and delicate paper engineering colliding to create six astonishing modern dress designs.

Created in partnership with DFS Galleria Sydney, the six dresses were designed and painstakingly handmade by Raffles Designers to celebrate the DFS Fall 2013 campaign of “Asia Unfolds”. Each style embraced the themes of Air, Sea and Land, in white with a touch of red.

Raffles students were invited to create wearable art using paper engineering, with six top designs put on display at the Galleria store located at The Rocks. Customers, students, teachers, local concierges and travel agents were then invited to vote for their favourite. The winner was first-year student Rebecca Deasey, who cited her inspirations as coral, the Barrier Reef and exotic fish.

“Due to their values of creativity, innovation, industry relevance and professional excellence, we at Sydney Galleria chose to collaborate with Raffles Sydney for our Fall 2013 campaign of Asia Unfolds,” said Ted Bagaman, DFS Galleria Sydney General Manager.

“The students were really excited to work on this amazing project,” said Nick Comino, Raffles Sydney’s Programme Director of Fashion Design and Marketing. “It has been a tremendous partnership with DFS Galleria Sydney. Working together has celebrated our mutual focus on design innovation throughout the Asia-Pacific region.”

Rebecca Deasey is now enjoying her prize too - a luxury designer handbag and iPad cover, courtesy of DFS Sydney Galleria.

“The DFS Sydney Galleria store is very cool,” she said. “I love all the luxury fashion brands and cosmetics over the whole four levels - and the visual merchandising is amazing. There’s nothing else quite like it in the Sydney CBD.”

The dresses are now on display at the ground floor area of the Raffles Sydney campus at 99 Mount St, North Sydney.

Raffles Jakarta presents sustainable costumes with Singapore International School

Jakarta, Indonesia - Raffles Jakarta and Singapore International School (SIS) recently collaborated in an environment awareness event based on the 1939 classic movie “The Wizard of Oz”, which became “The Wizard of Dunia” (Wizard of the World) as an art performance on 25 November 2013.

In line with the sustainable design objective, Raffles Jakarta students worked with unconventional materials and designed costumes made entirely from recycled materials. The costumes were tailor-made for the five characters of Wizard of Dunia - namely Javanese Scarecrow, Sumatran Cowardly Tiger, Styro Man and Head Winkie Soldier. During their creative journey, the Raffles Designers also got to enhance their knowledge about sustainable design and tap on their innovative minds to produce new costumes from used materials.

SIS students dressed themselves up in the special costumes for the performance held at the Sasono Langen Budoyo Theatre. The three-hour show gave to the assembly of proud parents, fellow pupils and guests a chance to sample some of the works undertaken over the past months by Raffles Jakarta and SIS, highlighting the concerns of the younger generation about the environment and exploitation of endangered animals.

Raffles Jakarta was proud to be able to play a significant role in this magnificent performance to educate the younger generation on environment awareness. The Raffles spirit of creativity and empowerment was transfused to the crowd that evening.

Raffles Jewellery Designer - Finalist for Dubai International Jewellery Design Award 2013

Singapore - Raffles Jewellery Designer, Michelle Doho, represented Raffles Singapore in the grand finals of the “Dubai International Jewellery Design Award 2013”.

“Being a finalist serves as a form of recognition that my designs are accepted in the jewellery design industry. This definitely boosts my confidence in creating more and better jewellery pieces,” said Michelle.

As the finalist for the Asian Far East Jewellery Award category, her work was displayed at Dubai World Trade Centre. Into its fifth year, the competition recognises and rewards excellence in the fields of jewellery design, innovation and creativity. It aims to provide a platform for both amateur and emerging jewellery designers to showcase their achievements and talents in the Middle East region.

Michelle’s theme is inspired by the well-known oil paper umbrella. Also known as Asian umbrella, it originated in China and was subsequently spread across Asia to Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Used since ancient times, the humble Asian umbrella serves varying purposes in different countries. Michelle hopes that her design can follow suit and personify the Asian cultures that audiences can relate to.

Sharing her motto with her peers, Michelle said, “Be confident of yourself. Look for a unique idea and great concept, display your best design skills, draw wholeheartedly, and stay positive.”

Raffles Singapore alumnus and creative practitioner present research findings in London

Singapore - An alumnus of Raffles Singapore recently presented an academic paper with her creative practitioner at the prestigious “2nd International Non-Western Fashion Conference” in London.

The student-and-mentor team presented the paper titled “Investigating Consumer Perception of Western Retail Models in Bangalore, India: An Explorative Study on Concept Stores” at London College of Fashion in University of Arts.

Their paper examines the attributes that influence the attractiveness of combining a bar and a boutique in the city of Bangalore, India. With the influx of modernity in Bangalore, today’s Indian consumers are more receptive towards innovative, creative and unconventional concepts.

With this, the paper explores the possibility of introducing the westernised hybrid boutiques into the city.

“I was overwhelmed and excited to have the opportunity to present in this conference. Not only can I share my research with renowned academic scholars from all over the world, I can also make use of this chance to interact, gather feedback and explore other possibilities,” shared Unita Chandan, who completed a Master of Commerce in Design Management at Raffles Singapore.

On her student and their work, Raffles Creative Practitioner Dr Anna Lottersberger said, “I am proud of Unita. I am also glad that our work has been recognised and valued by a high profile academic institution.”

The two-day conference showcased the state-of-the-art research projects by Western and non-Western scholars on fashion phenomena in Asia-Pacific, Africa and South America. Papers presented were diverse, ranging from history, sociology, anthropology, management to design.

The inspiration for the Raffles Singapore team came from Unita’s interest in developing her career in the fashion and lifestyle industry. It struck her that she could combine fashion and social drinking, which are the two utmost demand and interests among urban Indians today. Through research, they realised the rise of boutique bar is increasing in the West but not in India. This led them to further develop the idea and come up with the academic paper.

Unita said, “Dr Anna was one of my key motivations too. She believed in my work, supported and encouraged me. I would not be able to achieve what I have today without her as my teacher, guide, mentor and friend.”

As an encouragement to her peers, Unita added, “Know the value of research and how important your work can be to the society. Be passionate about your work and choose a topic that you can work on enthusiastically because it could turn out to be a path of direction for your future career or even a source of further research to others.”

Full paper of their research can be read here.

Fashion pop-up stores at Raffles Singapore by students

Singapore - There is no better place to get a great bargain than buying wares from your schoolmates at your own campus.

On 28 November 2013, Marketing students from Raffles Singapore set up fashion pop-up stores at the college campus, selling items ranging from apparels to accessories. The event was initiated to gain practical experience from their Buying Principles module. All the items were sourced and handpicked by the Raffles Marketers themselves. They also decided on the pricing and packaging of the goods.

The stores attracted a good number of patrons who were impressed with the merchandise selection. Business was brisk, but the greatest gain for the Raffles Marketers was the exposure and experience that they gained from setting up the stores all by themselves.

With the success of this event, there should be more coming up in future.

Singapore - Raffles Singapore invited award-winning architect Professor Jason Pomeroy to share his knowledge on sustainable residential design with a class of Interior Design students on 22 November 2013.

Prof Pomeroy is an adjunct professor at the University of Nottingham and Mapua Institute of Technology. He is also the founder and principal of Pomeroy Studio. Graduated with distinction from the Canterbury School of Architecture and Cambridge University, Prof Pomeroy sits on the editorial board of the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. He has worked in Brussels, Amsterdam, London, Bahrain and Kuala Lumpur. Some of his award-winning projects included the first carbon zero prototype house in Southeast Asia and Trump Tower Manila, the tallest residential tower in the Philippines.

The expert’s immense experiences in architecture, real estate and construction provided useful insights to Raffles students, who can learn how to approach a residential project with sustainability in mind.

Raffles Creative Practitioner Franz Gonzales said, “It is important for students to know the proper use of sustainable materials, so that they can design efficiently and conserve energy and light.”

Movie has brought us together

New Delhi, India - It was an evening of popcorns, soft drinks and entertainment for Raffles Delhi students, as they got to unwind and relax in the campus after their hectic classes to catch an Indian comedy show together.

Raffles Delhi has been active in coming up with events for students and staff to foster relationships. The movie night was held shortly after the Deepavali celebration in October, where they had lots of fun in welcoming the new year together.

The movie being screened was the award-winning “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro”, which means “Just let it go, Friend” in English. Produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India, the story is about two professional photographers who started a photo studio together and from their assignments, discovered and exposed some shady facts in the Indian politics.

To enhance the movie experience, Raffles Delhi also prepared some popcorns and soft drinks for the patrons to enjoy.

Fashion Design student Prerna Sawhney said,“It was a good idea to gather everyone to enjoy a movie together. We had a great time at the campus after a long day.”

Another student, Meerika Dhawan, commented, “It is a good effort by Raffles Delhi to encourage students and staff to get together. I am looking forward to attending more activities in the campus!”

There were suggestions from the students to screen other genres of movies such as horror and comedy in future.

Deepti Sharma, Programme Coordinator of Fashion Design, said, “The intent is achieved. The movie night seems to be a very good bonding session for students and staff.”

Antonio Madrigal from the Product Design department also praised the initiative. He said that he had an enjoyable time watching the movie with the students.

It was a wonderful evening for everyone.
